How is the GATE test scored, and what is the cut-off?
ASET results are reported as one combined score built from the four components, then ranked against the whole cohort, so entry depends on a cut-off rather than a pass mark. The 2026 selective-entry cut-off was 209.5. Everest Tutoring recorded 75% of its GATE students above it and a top score of 286.07.

Four components, one ranked score
Each component is marked separately and then combined. Because the components are added, the overall score is dragged down hardest by whichever one is weakest, and a student who is excellent at three of them and untrained at the fourth usually lands below a student who is solid at all four.
The scores are then ranked. Offers go out from the top of that ranking until the programs are full, so the number that matters is not a mark out of 100 but a position in the cohort.
What the 2026 round looked like
These are the figures from the Everest cohort, not the state figures, and they are counted the way the last row of the table says. We publish the method with the numbers so a parent can judge how much weight to give them.

Why the cut-off moves
The cut-off is set by the cohort and the number of places, so it drifts year to year. A family that targets last year's number is aiming at a moving object.
The stable target is the weakest component. Sitting a full-length timed mock, getting a per-component breakdown, and then spending the next term on the lowest of the four is the version of preparation that moves a ranked score.
Everest Tutoring runs a free full-length mock for new Year 4 and 5 students and returns a written report with the score by component, which is what makes that decision possible.
