The test

The four ASET components, and how each one is taught

Per-component timings are set by ACER and printed on the ASET admission notice, so we do not publish them here. The Everest mock runs the full paper in 2 hours.

Questions parents ask

What is GATE and what is the ASET?
GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) is the Western Australian Department of Education programme that runs academic selective courses at public secondary schools. Entry is by the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET), sat in March of Year 6 for Year 7 entry, or in Year 8 for Year 9 entry.
Is Year 4 too early to start?
No. Year 4 students sit the free mock exam twice before the real test, so the timed format is familiar by the time it counts. Year 4 classes build reading and reasoning habits rather than drilling past papers.
How is the 209.5 cut-off used?
209.5 was the lowest score that received a selective-entry offer in the 2026 round. Individual schools sit above it, so the score a student needs depends on the schools they list. Cut-offs move each year with the cohort.
Which schools can my child apply for?
Selective GATE programmes run at 24 WA public secondary schools, including Perth Modern School, Rossmoyne Senior High School, Willetton Senior High School and Harrisdale Senior High School. Preferences are listed on the Department of Education application.
How many students are in a GATE class?
Classes are capped at 10, and most run with six to eight, so the tutor checks every student's working each week. The first class is free and there is no entry test to join.
