GATE Quantitative Reasoning: what it tests, with a worked question
Quantitative Reasoning on ASET uses primary-school arithmetic inside unfamiliar question shapes: tables, timetables, maps, rates and patterns. What the component tests
The maths itself is rarely above the student's year level. What makes the component hard is that the numbers arrive inside something else: a timetable, a price list with a condition attached, a diagram drawn to scale, a pattern that grows.
So the skill being tested is reading a situation and deciding what to calculate. Students who are quick at arithmetic but have only ever met it as bare sums find this component the biggest jump.
A worked example
Question: A shuttle bus leaves the terminal every 18 minutes, starting at 7:06 am. A second bus leaves every 24 minutes, starting at 7:06 am. What is the first time after 7:06 am that both buses leave together?
Working: the buses meet again after a number of minutes that is a multiple of both 18 and 24. The lowest common multiple of 18 and 24 is 72. 72 minutes after 7:06 am is 8:18 am.
The arithmetic is a Year 5 skill. The work was recognising that "leave together" means lowest common multiple, and that the 7:06 am start applies to both, so the answer is measured from it rather than from the hour.
A student who instead lists both timetables out will usually get there too, but will spend three times the minutes, and this component is decided on pace as much as accuracy.
Common mistakes and the fix
The pattern in all four is the same: the student calculates before deciding what the question wants.
